Who are the "SLO Soles"

The SLO Soles Volkssport walking club was founded by SLO county residents in the Templeton area in early 2003. We received our AVA charter in July 2003. We owe many thanks to the Lompoc AVA club, the Central Coat Peregrine Pathfinders (CCPP), for helping us get started. It all started with the Avon 3-day Breast Cancer walk in 2002. Some of our members were training for the walk and were looking for something to keep them walking after the event. They found AVA, but the closest club was in Lompoc, so a new club was formed in Templeton.

Volkssport events are non-competitive walks.  They do not charge large entry fees because they are not pledge walks or races.  They are fun activities you do with a club, with your family, with your pet, or all by yourself.  Volkssports got its name from its origins in Europe.  Today there are thousands of volkssport clubs around the world, allied in the International Volkssport Federation, the IVV.  The American affiliate of the IVV is the American Volkssport Association, the AVA. For more information see the AVA Frequently Asked Question Page. Volkssport refers to walking, swimming and biking. The terms Volksmarch or Volkswalk are used to describe walking events.

Our Walks

A goal of the SLO Soles is to have at least two scheduled walks each month. The walks will either be nearby "Events" or "SLO Soles Group Walks". Here is a calendar of SLO Soles sponsored Events, SLO Soles Group Walks and other events we plan to attend.

Group Walks

Group walks are events where the SLO Soles schedule a time to get together and walk a YRE. This is not an "event" in that it is more casual. The group will meet and start at a specific time. We plan to start walking sharp on the start time, so plan to be there 5 or 10 minutes early.

Events

Events are walks on weekends and evenings which are hosted by the SLO Soles with staffed registration and checkpoints. You register at the start and then walk your own pace on marked or mapped routes.

Year Round Events (YRE)

Self-guided walks available most everyday. Register at the registration box, take a map and guide yourself on the route. AVA YRE Frequently Asked Questions page

It is mostly on paved surfaces, but it has moderate hills. It includes the campus of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and the Amtrak station, as well as historical, residential and downtown areas. The SLO Soles is now running the SLO YRE. We regret the folding of the Big Valley Vagabonds.

Administrative Stuff

Here you will find that legal administrative stuff, bylaws and what not.

June 2003, The SLO Soles regret that the Big Valley Vagabonds, AVA club in Fresno, is disbanding. However, we would like to send a giant thank you to them. They are giving the SLO Soles a large boost, in getting off the ground and running, by donating their supplies and treasury to the SLO Soles. Thank You Big Valley Vagabonds.
