2003 May 25 San Luis Obispo

On May 25 a group of eleven of us walked the SLO YRE in beautiful weather. The sun was out and it was warm and clear. We met at the Holiday Inn Express on upper Monterey Street (map). Walked the YRE and had just a great time. For many of the group, this was the first official AVA walk they had been on.

The Walk starts at the Holiday Inn Express on Monterey Street.
The route takes you down Grand Ave. onto the Cal Poly Campus.
You leave campus on California Blvd. and continue down to Mill Street. This is one of the more beautiful tree lined streets in SLO. Be sure to look at the homes hidden in the trees.
You wind down off Mill Street and on to Santa Rosa Street. You walk across the end of down town. You can see the wonderful Fremont Theatre Marquee.
As you walk down Santa Rosa Street, you will pass one of the "more famous" but little know buildings in SLO. This building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright .

You continue down Santa Rosa Street to the SLO Train Station.

From the Train Station you wind around town and onto Buchon Street. There are some really beautiful older homes in this part of town.
The walk takes you up Higuera Street in down town SLO. This is the main street in SLO with many wonderful little shops and stores.

A visit to down town is not complete if you do not stop in at Bubblegum Alley. If you have some gum your can join in the fun. Bubblegum Alley is ion the south side of Higuera between Broad and Garden.
We took a side trip and doubled back a couple of blocks to Nipomo. An extra half block over and you can walk the creek trail through town to the Mission. You have to go up and down some stairs so this is not a wheel chair or stroller accessible option.
Next to the Mission you will find the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society in the old Carnegie Library.
The walk goes past the front of the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. From the Mission you travel up Monterey Street back to the Holiday Inn Express.
