Santa Barbara Event
15 July 2003

Susan and Rod Marks car pooled with Bob and Katie Schrempp to Santa Barbara on Sunday 15 July 2003 to walk the Santa Barbara Event by the Channel Islands Volksmarchers. Susan's brother Bob lives in Santa Barbara and joined us for the walk. It was yet again a a warm clear sunny day, we have had such great weather this spring and early summer. Susan's Brother Bob acted as a tour guide giving bits of trivia here and there along the route. We walked at a very slow and easy pace.

The start finish point at Alice Keck Memorial Gardens. This picture is actually from after the walk but it seems to belong at the start of this album.

Alice Keck Memorial Gardens are just amazing. This large park is very beautifully landscaped with a large Koi pond in the center. The fish in these pictures are from 12 to 18 inches long. Also note the turtle in the third picture down on the left. There were paths that wandered in and out through the flower beds. All long throughout the gardens were boxes that planed information about the plants you were looking at. This garden is worth a stop in Santa Barbara.
One of the few obstacles along the route. This large tree is growing out across the sidewalk.
A couple of the fabulous houses we saw along the way.

The Crocker Family of San Francisco built five vacations homes on Garden Street. The Five Crocker Row (1894-95) homes were designed in the Mission Revival style, by architect Arthur Page Brown. The homes, built with wood and stucco, highlighted such design elements as ornate scalloped window detailing and pointed arched windows. One of the best known features of Crocker Row is a 300-pound metal dog named Rover. Today, Rover stands guard at 2010 Garden Street. Look to the right side of the driveway in the top picture and you can see Rover.
Junipero Plaza Sand Stone Gates.

Mission Santa Barbara. The bottom two pictures are of the old mission aqueduct.
2003-06-15-SB-017.JPG (98584 bytes) I found this interesting, a Jade plant growing out of the roof of a building.
2003-06-15-SB-018.JPG (110457 bytes) This is the most unusual house I have seen in a long time. The drive was was done up in sparkly stuff so that it shined. There were Christmas lights all over the house. Can you say "Big Fat Greek Wedding"?
2003-06-15-SB-019.JPG (87520 bytes) This has to be the largest magnolia tree I have ever seen.

The Santa Barbara County Court House.

The first picture is of the mural room.

We also went to the top of the bell tower. What a view. The two panorama shots are from the top. The first is looking kind of west and north, the second is north swinging east.

The last shot is of the county jail or holding area for the court house. Note the little tower on the top corner.

2003-06-15-SB-024.JPG (88678 bytes) Santa Barbara's State Street, what else needs to be said?
2003-06-15-SB-025.JPG (89093 bytes) 2003-06-15-SB-026.JPG (90642 bytes) We took a detour into the city library to see this fresco. They had to remodel the library and this fresco was on a wall that had to be removed. They developed a special process to remove the fresco from the wall and reassemble it into a frame.
