Both routes are rated 1+ by the AVA because parts of it are on dirt and gravel trails rather than pavement, because there is one gentle hill.  The walk goes through Shamel County Park, Moonstone Beach Parklands, East West Ranch, and residential areas of Cambria.  All along the route are rustic benches for resting and enjoying the view as well as picnic tables in both Shamel County Park and Leffingwell landing.  The walks are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs because of the terrain. This is such a beautiful walk we are working to turn this into a YRE.

  • Feb 29 - Changed to Vandenberg AFB - We are walking with the CCPP on this walk, here is some detail from Bill at CCPP.

We decided to make the change because the VAFB is a bit more "off the beaten path," so fewer of our members and friends are familiar with that route than SM. By planning a group event, we can also make sure that we have a "military affiliated" person at the start/finsih (the Base Visitor Center) to help if there are any problems. However, be sure that all adults bring a photo ID (drivers license is perfect).

Our route (AVA rating 1) wanders through base housing, along an urban reforestation area, and though the "Community Loop" containing the Base Exchange. It includes a Korean War era tank, a Minuteman III ICBM, and the Headquarters of the 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers) & 30th Space Wing (host unit for the base). Participants will finish by walking down the Boulevard of Flags. For more information and driving directions, point your browser to: http://www.concentric.net/~wuttenwe/vafb.html

After registering, you will drive approximately three miles south on Hwy 1 to POINT LOBOS STATE RESERVE for the walk. There is a charge to park in the reserve or you may park for free on Hwy 1 and walk in.
Event Description: Mon - Sat: 7 to 6; Sun, 7:30-5:30. Pets are NOT allowed. This is one of the most beautiful Events in the country. The trail goes around the perimeter of Point Lobos Reserve, with vistas of the breathtaking Big Sur Coast line, rocky seaside, and Carmel Bay. You might be lucky enough to see Sea Otters frolicking in the surf, or Gray Whales spouting on their trip along the coast. There are also a lot of non-aquatic wildlife in the reserve. The trail is very rough with roots, dirt paths, rocks and pot holes abounding, BUT if you can navigate a challenging trail this is a MUST DO EVENT. It has been well deservedly rated in the top 10 events of AVA. Rough trail, but worth the effort.
